I think a lot of the stigma that comes from self-publishing has been brought about by vanity presses pretending to be something else other than what they really are: glorified POD houses.

There's nothing wrong with self-publishing. Nothing.
Especially for folks that write in the short-fiction and poetry markets that want to make a collection of materials.
