I have permission from the publisher to talk about this now. For the last two months I've been compiling and editing a group anthology for the The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers. I think we've put together a strong table of contents.
As we get close to publication (tentatively scheduled for September 2010.), I plan to talk more about the anthology: How it came about, why I picked the stories included, and general thoughts on putting the anthology together.
For now, though, I give you the Table of Contents of "Northern Lights: 20 MinnSpec Tales."
Kissing Frogs by Jaye Lawrence
Three Views of the Maiden in Peril by Catherine Lundoff
The Desires of Houses by Haddayr Copley-Woods
Come and Catch Me, Henry by Jason D. Wittman
The Disconnected by David Steffen
The Leviathan’s Teeth by Kelly Barnhill
Dinosaurs of the Great Depression by Damian Sheridan
Garbage Man by R. Scott McCoy
Guess Who's Coming to Gotterdammerung by Terry Faust
Bright, Bright City Lights by Lyda Morehouse
Can't Stop, Won't by Carrie Devall
At The Edge Of Twilight, Melissa Remembers Flight by Michael Merriam*
Daedalus by Patrick Sullivan
Sabine Baring-Gould and the Werewolf by Roy C. Booth
Oh, Hell by Britt Aamodt
The Question by Sharon Boerbon Hanson
Narcissus in Links by Joel Arnold
The Radiator Burped by Abra Staffin-Wiebe
The Robber King And The Blood Orange Tree by Maggie Della Rocca
Run of the Fiery Horse by Hilary Moon Murphy
* I was not going to place one of my own stories in the anthology, since I was handling editorial duties. Several members of MinnSpec protested when they found out, pointing out that I'm a founding member of the group and have sold over 60 pieces of short fiction. I talked it over with the publisher and we came to this decision: I would select all the stories I wanted for the anthology. If that filled the word count requirement, it was closed. If there was room for another story, I would send my selection to the publisher (who also edits several magazines) and he would make the final decision as to whether my story was included or not.
About The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers
Founded in 2004, The Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers (MinnSpec) is a 265 members strong organization of writers working the field of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and all their various sub-genres. Our membership includes writers who have published multiple novels with major publishers house, editors of highly respected magazines, emerging writers with several professional and small press sales, and brand new writers just making their first nervous forays into submitting their work.
We provide our members with a variety of activities and events, including a monthly meeting to discuss topics of interest to writers. We sponsor three different monthly workshop groups. MinnSpec offers its members a chance to share writing goals, discuss market news, keep each other on task, and provides a place for general networking and chat about writing SF, both in person and on our message boards. We hold small celebrations to honor our member's publishing milestones and offer occasional short group readings where members can share works-in-progress and receive light feedback.
MinnSpec organizes periodic Kaffee Klatch chats with well-known local authors such as Lyda Morehouse, Patricia C. Wrede, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Pamela Dean. We also promote the Speculations Reading Series at Dreamhaven Books and hold occasional "Dinner and a Movie" events where we watch great films of the genre. MinnSpec is active in the science fiction convention scene, working with local and regional conventions to help provide programming, readings, and book signings for both the group as a whole and individuals members.
