Two hours of work, one induction motor, a new set of gaskets, new screws, and several hundreds of dollars later, we have heat.

The tech said the furnace will run more efficently, saving us some money, but damn...

It looks like Ramen Noodles and Kraft Dinner for awhile.

Good to hear!

On affordable food: See http://www.fareforall.org.

And it's possible to live almost entirely on potatoes.

Oh lordy, I'd rather go without heat! :P

But, yay!

Glad they were able to fix it!

So, does that mean grocery-store gift cards are the preferred birthday gift this year? ;)

Thanks you, and thanks again for the offer of loaned space heaters

When I was a young single man I pretty much lived on red beans and rice.

Maybe a lot of rotinni and other pastas, then.

hehehe. I suppose the budget will recover, but man, it was serious price shock.

It could have been worse: the whole unit could have been hosed.

Glad to hear. Given the strange set up you may have, this may not be an option, but Home Service Plus from Centerpoint Energy has been so great for us. They come out and fix things and even replace parts with little or (usually) no charge. Just for future reference if it at all applies.

It's funny you should bring that up, because the night before, during our RPG session, we talked with the other people in our group about just that.

[livejournal.com profile] pezwitch and [livejournal.com profile] williamofoccam have been pleased with that service, and we were talking about signing up.

I'll be exploring that possibility this week.

Yes yes yes! They've fixed our water heater twice, furnace once, and dishwasher once. It has been well worth the cost of the plan, and we haven't had to pay anything (extra) for the service calls. Highly recommended. :)

Yay for heat!

Rather than Ramen and Kraft I'd suggest lentils, barley, other affordable but more nutritious grains and legumes. (I've been on a healthy eating kick lately; it's only a side benefit that a lot of it is cheaper.)

Being that you do have an association that might not be an option. Talk to a board member or review your rules and guidelines to make sure there aren't restrictions.

In my condo we shared things like plumbing, AC and the building boiler for heat. The association took care of it all, well except the leaky pipe that was technically inside my unit. Grumble, stupid technicalities. Glad to here you have heat again.
