Update Stuff And All That.

I managed to write 1175 words last night, the best writing session I've had in months. It was all long-hand, so today I had to type it in, but that seems like a small price to pay for a good writing day. I may do some more long-hand writing, at least during the first draft. I don't know why, but I feel less pressure when I work with pen and paper.

Still not working on the novel rewrite, because I still can't seem to string together two days off in a row. I can do first draft stuff and short fiction work in various nooks and crannies of stolen time, but I need some uninterrupted space to work on the novel.

I was supposed to work on the novel over the long weekend, but things (mostly fun things!) kept me distracted, not the least of which was finishing my application for the Minnesota Arts Board Individual Artist Initiative Grant.

I had a migraine yesterday, so I have to make up my hours on Thursday. Friday and Saturday are booked, and I'd like to spend time with my wife on Sunday. Monday it's back to the puppets.

I've been suffering from insomnia again. I need to get on a set schedule and keep to it. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm going to be forced to take a couple of weeks off work so I can finish my damned novel rewrites.

I thought with my fingers all my adult life. When I lost the use of my right side and could no longer touch type, I stopped writing for a time. [ Using Dragon now ] Before computers,I spent several years on a typewriter, filling wastebaskets with paper, but I can't even conceive of writing long-hand. I find it inexplicable and amazing.

There is something soothing to me about using pen and paper. Of course, if you're going to use pen and paper then you want to use good tools. I have a Waterman fountain pen that glides across the page, with the biggest nib they make so I can read my own writing without peering at it too much! For a notebook I use a moleskine, the classic handmade notebooks of many artists and writers past.

I've been considering trying Dragon, if I can get it to play nice with JAWS. I suspect I would have to run one and then turn it off to run the other.

Dragon takes a lot of training, at least in my case with my stroke- damaged speech. But it sure beats the alternative, one-handed typing.

And if you have good diction, which you do, you won't have any real trouble with it. But it takes a lot of memory; I added a gig of RAM before it worked right.
