Shrimp. Peanuts. Yeah.

So...

I've known for several months that I've developed an allergy to shrimp.

The whole itchy, blotchy, broken out face things any time I ate shrimp was a pretty good clue. And this sucks, because dudes, it's shrimp! I love shrimp.

So...

I had an appointment for a check-up, and I was showing the doctor this eczema on my skin (so I thought) and she took one look and said, "Stop eating peanuts."

"But," says I, "I eat peanut butter all the time."

She gives me the eyebrow. I get the message (um, Michael, if you eat peanut butter all the time, and you're broken out and itchy all the time...) I stopped eating peanut butter and lo! The breakout goes away and I start to improve.

Then I eat a single piece of peanut butter fudge tonight and...well, it isn't pretty and I've needed my inhaler and I itch like a...well, yeah.

So, to review. Can't eat shrimp and I can't eat peanut butter, two of my favorite foods.

And yeah, still blind.

I have this urge to eat a pound of butterfly shrimp cooked in peanut oil and then drive around town.

Grr.

My sympathies.

And empathies. For a while, I was allergic to chocolate and blueberries.

The allergies went away, finally. As did my allergy to cats.

And my allergy to beestings.

Dude! A peanut allergy would wreck my diet. My sympathies.

*plays taps, softly*

I'm sorry to hear about that, man. That really bites.

I shall eat a Reese's Cup in your honor.

Damn! That sucks alot.

I developed my shrimp allergy suddenly. I adore shellfish, so I can relate. Be cautious of clams/oysters, etc.

If you decide to eat shrimp cooked in peanut oil, and go driving. Call me....I will be your assistant in crime, while wielding my eucalyptus sword. =P

That just sucks.

Peanuts will give me one or two pimples the next day. I mean, I think they're pimples but it's nothing like that.

I am so sorry.

Eurgh. I'm not a huge fan of peanuts, but no shrimp would just be a major downer for me. *sigh*

I am SO glad that I have no food allergies. Which is pretty amazing considering how long the list of my allergies runs...

Doode. I am so, so sorry. Fortunately, you aren't allergic to wheat, dairy, and MSG. My poor daughter can't eat anything normal.

This seems so unfair. I mean, sudden allergies you develop as an adult? Where's the justice in that?

K.

If I could bear your shrimp allergy for you, then I totally would! That sucks.

[identity profile] pdlloyd.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You have my sympathies. I remember my reaction when I was handed a list of foods I shouldn't eat if I wanted to avoid stomach problems. "First, you take away my chocolate, and then you take away my chocolate substitute!" (The chocolate substitute was peppermint.)

Please do be careful to avoid the foods you know you're allergic to; food allergies can be deadly.

No peanuts? no shrimp? Big bummer.
I guess it's time to search for new food passions!
Go, go, gastronaut!

EEwwww

I had some weird food allergies as a kid (chocolate, strawberries) but I grew out of them and had no problems until I hit my forties. Then new, different allergies flaired up: Rodents, dust, possibly bee stings. Dust! I love dust because the alternative is, yanno, DUSTING. Bleah. Anyway I guess this onset of new allergies at midlife is pretty common, or so my doc told me. I have my little inhaler and use it when I need it. So far I have escaped new food allergies but, if I get some new ones, I am hoping to be allergic to beets and hominy.

Oh, you poor thing!

[identity profile] one-undone.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh! That sucks. Sorry to hear it. Those are my two favorite foods too. :/

MY mother is severely allergic to shellfish except for mussels. Apparently they do not count as shellfish. Now I'd talk to a doctor before trying anything, but this sounds like it might be good news for others as well...

[identity profile] ladysea.livejournal.com 2009-01-14 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
*nod* I was told it was a 50-50 chance if I would have a reaction to mussels. I got the wrong 50. =/

Ugh, that sucks for you :-(
