I've been watching my flist post their Nebula Award eligible stories, and it occurred to me that though highly unlikely, you can't win if you don't play. I checked which of my stories had been published in the eligible period, and discovered "All The Leaves Your Bed" and "At The Edge Of Twilight, Melissa Remembers Flight" were in the proper time-frame.

However--like nearly all of my best work--they were not originally published in the United States, so are not eligible.

Yes, it really is a 'if you don't play' situation. I only put up one thing because that's the only one I would throw any weight behind...but I'm not going to hold my breath ;o)

Argh, indeed. And those are two of my best pieces of work, in my opinion.

That is disappointing...

Hey, how's the Loon story doing?

I'd be more disappointed if I thought either of those stories could be contenders. They are some of my best work, but I don't know how they'd stack up against the best of the best in the field. as for the Loon story, it's almost ready for workshop. I'm thinking about rejoining OWW.

Let me know if you do because I'd love to take a look at it...

I'm curious (and, indubitably, far behind in reading my flist, and so in having a clue about what may have been previously posted), in which country or countries were these stories first published? Are they available online, or only in print productions?

This is what I'm basing my thoughts that I'm not eligible on:

6. Eligibility
a. All works first published in English, in the United States, during the calendar year, in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, or a related fiction genre are eligible for the Nebula Awards® in their respective categories.

However, I did notice this:

b. Works first published in English on the Internet or in electronic form during the calendar year shall be treated as though published in the United States.

So I might well be wrong about one of my stories, since it was published in English on the internet by a magazine based in Sweden (though it uses U.S. and England-based editors). I'm going to ask for a clarification. The other magazine is based in Australia, and the story is in .pdf format and only available to subscribers.

Not that I think either story would get nominated, mind you.
