mmerriam: (Stories)
[personal profile] mmerriam
I've been working on Rija's Tale for the last three hours, clocking in a little over 1100 so far. I'm planning to work more on it this afternoon and tonight while [livejournal.com profile] careswen is in class, so no word meter yet.

One major incentive to finish this novels is that, while I've love writing Rija and some of the other characters in this book, I'm not all that thrilled about writing secondary world Big Epic Fantasy. Which is strange, because given my history as a gamer and reader of BEF fiction, you'd think this would be exactly what I want to write.

But instead, I found that I love writing Urban Fantasy (which I also read a lot of) and Paranormal Romance. And I've got two UF/PR novels on deck and waiting their turn.

So why keep on with the BEF novel? First, I've already had a small press publisher express interest in it (though no promises on their part. But at least they want to look at it when I'm done). Given that I don't have an agent, or a major publishing contract, or a deadline of any sort, this is damned good incentive to go ahead and write this novel now. If this was not the case, I'd be working on Dark Water Blues instead.

Plus, as I said earlier, I really adore writing Rija herself. She's fun. She's sensible. She not a hero or anti-hero, just some poor smuck of a woman tossed into the deep end and trying to swim.

Again today I was writing a scene, and I had to stop and think, "Now what would she really do here?" Well, she's mostly concerned with her own survival and trying to keep herself as safe and uninjured as possible. Faced with a situation where she cannot run or hide from a physical confrontation (which is her first choice) Rija would not cry or beg or plead. She knows that's not going to help.

No, Rija knows there is no such thing as a second place winner in a fight. Rija, in a situation where she cannot avoid a fight, would hit first, fast, and hard. And then run for her life. Or in this case, stab the guy, and then run.

Writing Rija is fun, but I'm not sure I'm going to want to write a BEF book again.

I think I'm going to switch and finish proofing the synopsis for Last Car to Annwn station in anticipation of handing it (well, actually three different versions of it) to readers. Then if I have time, I'll work a little on the rewrites for "Cold Hand in Mine," and then get some more work on Rija's Tale in tonight while the wife is in class.

I might post tonight with a word meter.
