Northern Lights: 20 MinnSpec Tales ToC: #3. "The Desires of Houses" by Haddayr Copley-Woods
I had known Haddayr online for quite awhile before I met her in person. Energetic, sly, funny, and a passionate conversationalist about what she believes in, Haddayr is always a joy to be around. I think my favorite personal memory of Haddayr is she came up to me after one of my readings and...well she said something that later she worried had been inappropriate. I personally found it both funny and a bit of a relief.
When Haddayr offered me "The Desires of Houses" for the anthology, I gave a little tiny squee. It was shorter than my guidelines stated (and was one of two stories I picked that were under 1000 words), but that did not matter. I mean hey, they're guidelines, not laws. I was offered a story that had appeared in not one but two "Best of" anthologies. I wanted this story. When you read it you may find yourself asking, "Is this fantasy? Is it magical realism? Is it romance? Erotica?" to which I would answer, "Yes."
"The Desires of Houses" was originally published online at Strange Horizons in February, 2006, and was reprinted in Best Romantic Fantasy 2007
and Best of American Erotica 2008.
