1100+ new words tonight and a phone call from Joni at Writers of the Future letting me know I placed out as an Honorable Mention, which, while nice, is not a sale. She did say that K.D. was sending me a note concerning my story. I'll wait to see what K.D. had to say before sending it back out.

For some folks HM might be seen as a "Loss" but for those who stand on the sidelines and cheer on the contestants, it is a Hand-clapping occurence!

I suppose I would be more excited about the HM if it wasn't for the fact that I've been here before as a 2x semifinalist, 3x quarter-finalist, and 2x HM. On the positive side, I've placed all of the stories short after they came back from the contest.

I didn't realize you'd done so many of these WotF competitions. I think congratulations are in order anyway.

What's the numerical breakdown on entries, finalists, HM, etc?

And I'm surprised, given all your sales, that you still qualify for the contest at all. Is it only placement in the SFWA-listed markets that count as sales for them?

Gonna submit to the Heinlein Centennial?

They don't tell you what the exact numerical break down is, though why I have no idea. It seems like there are about 100 or so Honorable Mentions. You can continue to qualify for the WotF Contest until you have made the necessary sales to qualify for full SFWA membership (one novel or three short pieces to qualified markets). I had not even thought of the Heinlein Centennial. Are they doing a contest of something?

The Heinlein Society is sponsoring a writing competition to honor the centennial (last year) of Heinlein's birth. Here's the link: http://www.heinleinsociety.org/contest.html.

It carries a $5,000 first prize, and "All stories submitted for the contest may be considered for publication in an anthology."

The deadline is June 1st. Stories must be less than 15,000 words, and will be judged, inter alia, on the extent to which they "[reflect] the spirit, ideas, and philosophies contained in the works of Robert A. Heinlein." It's the latter parameter that has me stumped. I had a story that had sort of a Heinlein flavor to it, but no way can I have it ready by June 1st.

So close, yet again. At least I can usually sell those stories to someone else later down the road.
