I'm holding my breath and hoping for the best.

Take a look at InsaneJournal as an alternative or bolthole.

Insanejournal would be my next place to land, if things go wrong here. Here's hoping they don't.

Yea, I hope it's not curtains for us...

I'd say we're safe for the immediate future. That they are still supporting the site is a good thing. Insanejournal would be my next place to land, if things go wrong here. Also, down in the comment thread, [livejournal.com profile] stillnotbored has some better information.

Thanks.

Someone also metioned an archiving program: ljarchive which can be found at sourceforge.net

I may be doing that.

Fingers crossed LJ weathers the storm, because I think it's the best social networking site by far. Incidentally, the second para really annoyed me: "The quirky site, part blog and part social network, is best known for its users' weird obsessions — like the troublesome clique of Harry Potter erotica writers..." Why do journalists feel the need to create a sensationalist angle on everything even when it's plain old bollocks?

Not good news at all. This is home to me.

Thank you for the link.

Thanks. I'm going to check out Insanejournal....

You can use LJArchive to save all your stuff.

[identity profile] kmarkhoover.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Follow this link and click the green download button. It will download a program that will enable you to save your LJ. A lot of people swear by it, though I haven't used it myself -- but I will.

My stuff always starts in a word document. I'll need to back-up my wife's journal, though.

I keep basically the same blog on Blogger and MySpace. I've also got a profile on Facebook, with links to my Blogger blog. I'm prepared if LJ vanishes, but it would be sad. There seems to be more real interaction on LJ than the other blogging sites/social networks.

Same here: I'm on blogger, myspace, and facebook. I'd say we're safe for the immediate future. That they are still supporting the site is a good thing. If they shut this place down I'm going to be so very very pissed. Blogger sucks, you have no options to shut out anyone and face book is set up for children.

Gah. I'm paid up for a couple years.

Good information in these posts, thanks for sharing them.

I'm learning it's often what you make of sites like Facebook and Blogger. Live Journal is better, but there are ways to make Facebook more usable for adults. It just takes a while.

Still, Facebook does seem to be more about playing games and sending virtual gifts than anything else. And it's quite hard to make connections on Blogger.

I forgot I was logged out when I posted the above reply. I hate when that happens.

Hopefully SUP is just trying to lean up the business and LJ itself will be safe. My flist would spread far and wide if LJ went under, and I'd likely have to replace it with several different blogging sites, InsaneJournal, Vox, Blogger, etc.
